About this role
About This Role
We are seeking a high-reaching individual and passionate Associate with technical proficiency to join the Data Strategy & Solutions team. We are a team of seasoned Data Engineers and Platform Engineers building production-grade, cloud-native data products that power BlackRock’s investment decisions
With over USD $11 trillion of assets, we have an outstanding responsibility: our technology empowers millions of investors to save for retirement, pay for college, buy a home and improve their financial wellbeing. Being a Data Product and Operation specialist at BlackRock means you get the best of both worlds: working for one of the most successful financial companies and working in a team that is towards faster and better decisions for investments
The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and managing data products derived from web-harvested and unstructured sources. This is an outstanding and unique opportunity offering to contribute to the design and execution of data operations, with a clear trajectory toward leadership.
Hands-On Engineering + Ops
- Someone who is passionate about solving sophisticated business problems through data!
- A hands-on engineer who writes idiomatic Python, SQL and/or Java/Go to build, optimize and harden data pipelines
- Own the end-to-end data operations lifecycle: ingestion, validation, monitoring, alerting, and incident response for large-scale unstructured and web-harvested data and is capable of operating data products end-to-end, from raw acquisition through to quality control, delivery, and issue resolution.
- Enthusiastic about establishing and maintaining standard methodologies for data engineering, focusing on data quality, security, and scalability.
- Excited about collaboration with researchers, technologists, and portfolio managers to ensure data products are well-aligned with investment needs.
- Looking forward to contributing to technical roadmap and team development, with an eye toward growing into a leadership role within 2–3 years.
What We’re Looking For
- 3+ years of experience in data engineering, data product operations, or a similar domain
- 3+ years building ETL/ELT pipelines and advanced SQL in Snowflake and BigQuery.
- Experience ingesting both structured and unstructured (API, web-harvested, document) data at scale, using frameworks like Scrapy.
- Deep expertise architecting data workflows on GCP—BigQuery, Pub/Sub/Dataflow, Cloud Functions—or Snowflake, including performance tuning, cost-optimization
- Expertise with orchestration (Airflow/Composer, Cloud Composer, Prefect), including DAG design, sensor/trigger patterns, and SLA monitoring.
- Ability to resolve issues in data pipelines and debug erroneous outputs efficiently.
- Skills in anomaly detection to identify and resolve data drift or schema changes with an understanding of data life cycle from data acquisition to delivery to data deprecation.
- Demonstrated data-product leadership: defined SLAs, maintained versioned schemas, set usage SLIs/SLAs, and managed stakeholder roadmaps (Agile/Kanban).
- Strong documentation skills, including technical specifications, runbooks, and SOPs.
- Effective communication skills to bridge data engineering and business collaborators.
- Leadership readiness, demonstrated through mentoring, roadmap planning, and team coordination.
- Ambitious candidate, eager to take on responsibility and progress into a leadership position within 2–3 years.
- Proven track record building self-service data platforms or internal APIs consumed by analytics/ML teams.”
- Experience in CI/CD for data pipelines (GitOps, containerization, automated testing).
- Strong debugging skills—comfortable triaging pipeline failures, writing unit/integration tests, and restoring data consistency.
