API Gateway Engineer - Kong
Job Description
Role Overview
Seeking an experienced API Gateway Engineer with strong expertise in Kong to design, implement, and manage our API infrastructure. Must be proficient in Lua scripting, with additional skills in Go or JavaScript.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain Kong API Gateway in non-production environments.
- Configure and manage Kong Services and Routes for API traffic management.
- Implement and configure standard Kong plugins (authentication, rate limiting, logging, transformations)
- Integrate Kong with CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms.
- Automate Kong deployments using IaC (Terraform, Ansible)
- Develop custom Kong plugins using Lua scripting (added advantage)
Required Skills
Kong Expertise
- 3+ years hands-on experience with Kong API Gateway
- Hands-on in Kong Services & Routes configuration along with standard Kong plugins:
- Kong Admin API and declarative configuration (deck)
Scripting & Programming
- Lua (primary)
- Go or JavaScript (secondary)
- Shell scripting (Bash/Python)
- Understanding of Kong PDK (for custom plugins)
Infrastructure & Tools
- CI/CD tools
- Cloud platforms (GCP/AWS)
- Monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenSearch)
