What's the role?

As a Lead GIS Data Engineer, you will shape the architecture, technical direction, and evolution of spatial data processing solutions that support map maintenance and geospatial data products. You will lead domain-level improvements in automation, data quality, scalability, and applied AI/ML across complex workflows. This role combines deep GIS data engineering expertise with senior technical leadership and cross-functional influence to modernize geospatial processing and accelerate scalable map update capabilities.

In this role, you will:

  • Define geospatial data engineering architecture and direction: Define and evolve the architecture, design patterns, and technical direction of complex spatial data processing pipelines and frameworks used in map creation, maintenance, and related products.
  • Lead domain-level workflow modernization: Drive modernization of spatial data workflows to improve scalability, maintainability, interoperability, and operational efficiency across multiple processing areas and source types.
  • Lead advanced spatial analytics and systemic issue resolution: Lead complex geospatial analysis to detect change, identify systemic quality issues, resolve high-impact data and pipeline problems, and improve map content reliability at scale.
  • Shape automation and AI/ML-enabled processing: Define and advance rule-based, data-driven, and AI/ML-enabled approaches for feature matching, attribute comparison, change detection, prioritization, confidence scoring, anomaly detection, and assisted decision-making.
  • Establish data quality and operational standards: Define validation frameworks, observability practices, performance measures, and reliability standards to improve production confidence, traceability, and data quality across processing pipelines.
  • Provide senior technical leadership across teams: Guide solution design, promote reusable patterns and platform thinking, influence engineering standards and best practices, and support technical alignment across geospatial data engineering.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment and delivery: Partner with engineering, analytics, product, operations, and adjacent technical teams to align roadmaps, deliver strategic capabilities, and enable adoption of scalable workflow improvements.
  • Guide long-term domain evolution: Evaluate emerging technologies, data engineering approaches, and AI/ML opportunities, and translate them into practical technical direction for the domain.

You are passionate about combining GIS expertise, data engineering, and AI automation to redefine how spatial data is collected, interpreted, and transformed into living, intelligent maps.

Who are you?

You are a motivated and curious GIS Data Engineer with a passion for data, automation, and emerging technologies. You combine strong analytical thinking with hands-on technical skills to design and operate scalable spatial data solutions in a cloud environment.

  • Deep GIS data engineering and spatial analysis expertise
  • Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Strong experience with GIS and spatial processing tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, FME, or PostGIS
  • Strong system design and architecture skills for scalable geospatial data pipelines
  • Deep knowledge of engineering best practices, including Git/GitLab, CI/CD, code reviews, documentation, and production support
  • Experience with cloud-native services and distributed data processing patterns
  • Strong expertise in validation frameworks, monitoring, observability, and operational reliability
  • Strong understanding of automation strategies for large-scale geospatial workflows
  • Practical experience applying AI/ML or data science methods in geospatial production workflows
  • Ability to define technical direction, influence standards, and lead cross-functional engineering efforts
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder alignment skills
