Job Summary:

What you need to know about this role
You'll manage a data engineering team that works with data loads/pipelines from a variety of sources including internal data sources and files from external partner/vendors. The data is used for analytics, building credit models, financial reporting, and transmission to business partners/vendors.
Meet our team
We are the Data Team within PayPal Credit and more specifically, the Credit Platform Team. Our team supports PayPal Credit products including BNPL loans, credit cards, and merchant loans.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Directly manages software development projects (including program management) and execution through individual contributors. May also lead project teams across platforms or groups
  • Implements processes to drive strong operational hygiene for all components and systems within their group
  • Responsible for the delivery of projects, including quality and timeliness, that impact their domain and potentially one other
  • Demonstrates strong tactical ability by managing the roadmap for a scrum team responsible for technical issues of diverse scope where analysis requires an understanding of current business or tends
  • Competent at communicating technical issues with non-technical audiences
  • Analyzes multiple sources of information and identifies & resolves complex technical, operational, and organizational problems relating to software development.
  • Collaborates with direct team, managers in org, stakeholders such as Product Owners & PMO

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience leading or mentoring a team of engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated experience with people management fundamentals: 1:1s, performance conversations, and career development
  • Prior involvement in engineering hiring, including interviews, calibration, and onboarding
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to connect team-level execution to broader organizational goals and priorities
  • Proven ability to manage project delivery under real-world constraints including time pressure and limited capacity, with a track record of making pragmatic tradeoffs without sacrificing quality
  • Proficient in Python and SQL with hands-on experience building and operating production-grade data pipelines; comfortable writing clean, testable, maintainable code and reviewing the work of others
  • Experience leading or managing data engineering teams in a code-first, cloud-native environment with strong software engineering practices including version control, automated testing, and CI/CD
  • Experience designing and evolving data architectures that support analytics, reporting, and decision-making at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to drive adoption of modern data engineering practices — including influencing teams and stakeholders to move away from legacy patterns
  • Embraces AI tools responsibly as a force multiplier for engineering productivity, accelerating delivery without compromising code quality or security standards
  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools and cloud-native data platforms
  • Background in financial services or other regulated industries

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of overall experience in data engineering, software engineering, or a related discipline
  • 1+ years of experience managing, leading, or formally mentoring a team of engineers
