Job Description

1. Role Purpose

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic leader to join our finance team as the Group Prudential Controller for Wise plc Group. 

As the first line-owner of prudential risk the role will provide strategic leadership and expert technical oversight of all prudential matters, acting as the primary point for prudential compliance for Wise plc Group. 

This individual will not only ensure compliance with all existing and future regulations under the MIFIDPRU regime but will also provide critical forward-looking analysis and strategic advice to the Board and Executive Committee, across a variety of highly important strategic projects including other regulatory regimes globally. 

2. Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Advisory:

  • Provide expert advice and strategic counsel to the Group Prudential Risk Committee, Group ALCO and Group Board and relevant governance committees on all prudential matters, including regulatory reporting and policy, including interpretations on rules over  own funds and liquid asset requirements.

  • Provide expert advice regarding the implications for prudential regulatory matters arising from strategic projects, new products or new licenses globally. 

  • Maintain the group’s prudential risk appetite framework, ensuring it is embedded in decision-making processes across the business while supporting cross border regional capital management. 

  • Lead the firm's engagement and relationship with all global regulators that Wise is supervised by on all finance prudential matters, fostering an open, transparent, and credible dialogue.

  • Lead the firm’s global regulatory reporting team responsible for all regulatory reports and controls for the group's global licenses. 

 

Capital & Risk Management (ICARA Process):

  • First-line ownership of the firm's critical Internal Capital Adequacy and Risk Assessment (ICARA) process, ensuring it is a dynamic and value-adding management tool. Particularly owning the capital reporting and controls, Own Funds and Own Funds Requirements Calculations.

  • Oversee the firm's own funds planning, forecasting, and stress testing capabilities, ensuring resources remain robust under severe but plausible scenarios and sufficient for an orderly wind-down.

  • Lead the first-line prudential risk assessment and management for all new products, business initiatives, and strategic changes, ensuring they are structured and executed in alignment with the firm's capital and liquidity resources.

Regulatory Reporting & Control:

  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all prudential regulatory reporting submissions to all Global Regulators that Wise is supervised by (e.g. FCA, APRA, National Bank of Belgium etc.) 

  • Design, implement, and maintain the first-line regulatory reporting and prudential control framework, ensuring robust governance and processes are in place to mitigate reporting and compliance risks.

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement within the regulatory reporting function, leveraging technology and automation to enhance efficiency and control.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of prudential risk and regulatory reporting professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and technical expertise.

  • Manage and influence a wide range of senior internal stakeholders, including Senior Directors in Finance, group ALCO members and business line heads, to ensure a cohesive approach to prudential management.

  • Provide strong stakeholder management and collaboration across Banking, Finance, Risk and Treasury. 

Qualifications

Essential Experience & Knowledge:

  • A minimum of 10-15 years of experience in a senior prudential risk or regulatory reporting role within an FCA-regulated MIFIDPRU investment firm or PRA- regulated Banking institution. 

  • Proven track record of leading the production, delivery, and embedding of the ICARA process and associated wind-down planning to a standard that meets regulatory expectations.

  • Expert-level knowledge of the UK prudential regulatory framework for investment firms and banking institutions, including MIFIDPRU, IFPR, CRR and associated FCA sourcebooks (e.g., SYSC). Knowledge of IFRS 9 is also required.

  • Demonstrable experience in managing relationships and interacting with regulators, particularly the FCA.

  • Significant experience in leading and developing teams of technical specialists.

 

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Educated to degree level. A professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CFA, or FRM is highly desirable.

  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to articulate complex technical concepts and influence decisions at the Board level.

  • Proven ability to influence and motivate teams to challenge the status quo and improve processes, alongside strong control environment skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong commercial mindset and the ability to integrate regulatory requirements into business operations.

  • Unquestionable integrity, sound judgment, and the confidence to advise and guide senior management and the Board on prudential risks and strategy.
