Job Summary:
We are seeking a Senior AI/ML Data Scientist to lead the design and application of advanced machine learning solutions across global trade and customs compliance. This role will be responsible for shaping our AI strategy, mentoring junior talent, and driving impactful models that power predictive compliance, duty optimization, and regulatory risk management. As a senior member of the team, you will work closely with product managers, trade experts, and engineers to bring AI-first innovation into our data products and advisory solutions, ensuring measurable business outcomes at scale.
Key Responsibilities: -
- End-to-End Model Strategy & Development
Own the design, development, and continuous improvement of advanced ML models for predictive compliance—detecting anomalies, forecasting clearance delays, automating HS classification, and assessing customs risk. - Thought Leadership in Applied AI
Partner with business leaders and GTCC advisors to proactively identify high-value AI opportunities (e.g., reducing audit exposure, optimizing duty strategies), define hypotheses, and translate them into measurable impact. - Data Science Leadership & Mentorship
Guide and mentor junior data scientists/analysts on modeling approaches, feature engineering, and best practices. Lead technical reviews and establish standards for experimentation and validation. - Advanced Data Exploration & Feature Engineering
Work with large-scale, multi-source customs and trade datasets, driving deep exploration to surface insights, refine features, and unlock new modeling techniques tailored to complex regulatory landscapes. - Model Validation, Benchmarking & Governance
Benchmark multiple ML/AI techniques (classification, NLP, time-series, clustering, graph models) and ensure robust validation, scalability, and compliance with AI governance frameworks. - Insight-to-Action Translation
Transform model outputs into actionable insights that directly support strategic decision-making across GTCC, CCT, and digital advisory platforms. Drive adoption of AI-enabled insights across regions. - Cross-Functional Collaboration & Innovation
Work closely with product managers, trade compliance experts, and engineering teams to shape data product strategies. Contribute as a senior voice in agile squads, ensuring AI-first thinking guides solution design. - Continuous Learning & External Engagement
Stay ahead of the curve on applied AI/ML, generative AI, and agentic AI approaches for compliance and trade. Bring in external best practices, research advancements, and regulatory AI trends.
Required Skill & Experience: -
- 7+ years of industry experience in data science or applied machine learning.
- Proven ability to align AI/ML initiatives with business strategy and regulatory priorities (compliance, duty optimization, risk mitigation).
- Strong track record of benchmarking models, optimizing performance, and ensuring explainability/interpretability for regulated environments.
- Knowledge of data privacy, ethical AI practices, and regulatory compliance for AI models in global trade contexts.
- Advanced knowledge in ML/algorithms and statistical modeling (classification, regression, clustering, anomaly detection).
- Proficient in Python, Jupyter, SQL, and libraries such as scikit-learn, pandas, XGBoost, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
- Ability to design experiments, structure data science sprints, and communicate hypotheses and results.
- Experience with customs data, HS codes, FTAs, or trade compliance is highly valuable.
- Comfort working in ambiguity and iterating quickly with partial datasets.
- Strong storytelling skills—able to turn model outcomes into business-ready insights.
- Experience working in cloud environments such as Azure.
- Solid understanding of data pipelines and collaboration with data engineering teams.
Impact Areas: -
- Model Accuracy: Improve classification precision and risk prediction through smarter, context-aware models.
- Innovation Velocity: Accelerate Mode 2 innovation by delivering validated use cases quarterly (e.g., HS classification, anomaly detection, quota risk).
- Insight-Driven Decisions: Enable GTCC and CCT to provide more precise, data-backed recommendations to high-value customers.
- Strategic Differentiation: Contribute to MCS’s goal of launching three new AI-powered products and achieving 99.9% compliance accuracy.
- Scalable Data Products: Translate research and prototypes into scalable solutions aligned with enterprise architecture. Ensure models are reusable, explainable, and maintainable across multiple regions and business lines.
- Mentorship & Capability Building: Mentor junior data scientists and analysts, raising the overall maturity of AI/ML within the organization. Contribute to best practices in model development, experimentation, and documentation.
Qualifications: -
- MSc/PhD in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Math, or similar.
- 7+ years in hands-on model development (industry or academic research).
- Passionate about turning data into products that impact global trade, compliance, and operational excellence.
- Eager to work in a mission-driven team shaping the future of customs intelligence.
