Founded in 2018 with co-headquarters in Dublin and Boston, Tines powers some of the world's most important workflows. Our intelligent workflow platform applies AI, automation, and integration with human ingenuity to drive real business results.
Tines serves a diverse range of customers, from startups to public companies, including Canva, Databricks, Elastic, Kayak, Intercom, and McKesson. At Tines, we're driven by our values of Simplicity, Speed, and Soundness. We're committed to delivering exceptional customer experiences while fostering a company culture that nurtures individual curiosity, growth, and integrity. We’re excited about what’s next, and we’re looking for others to join us on our journey.
Job Summary
You'll join the team primarily responsible for making our self-hosted product offering as easy as possible for our customers to install and operate, alongside owning all of the supporting services and tools that our self-hosted customers rely on.
This role is about more than your individual contributions: you'll have an influential voice in shaping our technical direction, our product, and our culture. We have a hugely supportive and collaborative engineering team that takes great pride in the work we do and the challenges we solve. We're eager to help grow and nurture each other's abilities and also create an environment where we have the ability to do our very best work.
You can work fully remotely from anywhere in the US with a preference for being based in the Greater Boston Area area. Here, you can make use of our Tines office space in downtown Boston to meet up with other members of the MA engineering team when you wish.
What you will be doing:
- Changing the way customers provision and operate our self-hosted product offering along with the services and infrastructure powering self-hosted installations.
- Identifying and fixing availability risks and monitoring gaps to ensure our services stay healthy and available.
- Enabling software engineers to build new product features that work seamlessly across cloud and self-hosted environments: observability, logging, and simplifying deployments.
- Using our own product extensively to automate infrastructure maintenance and to build DevOps tooling for customer deployments.
- Identifying areas for improvement in our containerized architecture and deployment strategies.
- Using your knowledge and experience to mentor other engineers in container orchestration and Kubernetes best practices across all of Tines: Sales, Support, and Engineering.
- Act as an subject matter expert for critical self-hosted customer issues.
Projects you might work on:
- Optimizing Kubernetes deployments to improve reliability and resource utilization for self-hosted customers via changes to HPA, affinity rules, and resource quotas.
- Developing new observability solutions that work across air-gapped and connected self-hosted environments using industry standard tools like FluentD, Open Telemetry for metrics and traces.
- Collaborating with our Product and Design teams to enable brand new product features for self-hosted customers, like run script support, CLI integrations, and email processing capabilities.
- Streamlining the installation, upgrade, and migration processes for self-hosted customers using Helm and Kubernetes operators.
- Writing a blog post to share container orchestration insights with the community.
- Creating upgrade paths for PostgreSQL databases in self-hosted environments with minimal downtime.
- Building automation tools to simplify customer environment management and troubleshooting.
Is this the right role for you?
- 5-8 years in an SRE or similar role. We're looking for seasoned professionals ready to take on greater responsibility.
- You have experience architecting, maintaining, and supporting systems with containerized applications, ideally k8s. Experience with air-gapped environments is a plus.
- You understand the challenges of supporting customer-managed infrastructure. Experience with troubleshooting deployment issues, creating clear documentation, and designing robust escalation paths is valuable.
- Your abilities matter, not your education or exactly where you've worked. We just need you to show us that you have accumulated the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
- This role is broad, not specialized. While your main focus will be on self-hosted deployments, you'll work across our stack. You don't need expertise in every area, but you should be comfortable learning new technologies with the support of your teammates. We use Ruby, Rails, React, TypeScript, Postgres, Redis and Docker.
- You are customer obsessed and willing to go deep into unfamiliar stacks to find root causes for errors, performance issues, and bugs. You understand that the best solution isn’t always the best technical solution, but a compromise that meets customers where they are.
- We work healthily and sustainably. We work reasonable hours, we take our holidays and we plan our workloads realistically. No matter how excited we get by a project, it's more important to not get burnt out from overwork.
- Your contributions will be obvious. On a small team like ours, you don't have to spend a ton of time and energy making sure your work is seen - your impact and value will be clear to everyone.
- We're building an inclusive, supportive team. We have a wonderfully wide spectrum of colleagues at Tines, and we treat them all with kindness and respect - we expect that you will too. We don't hire people that treat their colleagues badly, no matter how talented they are.
Target Annual Compensation: 200-220k
