Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, Equipment Monitoring, and Site Visibility. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role:

Samsara is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Data Platform team, which builds the core infrastructure that powers the company’s data products and insights at scale. You will design and maintain a reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure for moving, cataloging, and processing petabytes of data.

Your work will enable engineers, data scientists, and analysts across Samsara to develop products for our customers, ML models, and operational insights. You’ll work on foundational systems like our data lake/lakehouse, distributed compute and orchestration infrastructure, internal data libraries, and ingestion frameworks.

This role is ideal for experienced software engineers who have worked on data infrastructure, platforms, or backend ingestion systems and are comfortable operating in a fast-paced, product-centric environment.

This is not an analytics or data engineering role. If your experience centers around business logic, SQL data modeling, ETL tools (e.g. dbt, Informatica, Fivetran), or BI/reporting platforms (e.g. Looker, Tableau), this position is likely not the right fit.

This is a remote position open to candidates based in the United States. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.

You should apply if:

  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: The software, firmware, and hardware you build will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You want to build for scale: With over 2.3 million IoT devices deployed to our global customers, you will work on a range of new and mature technologies driving scalable innovation for customers across industries, driving the world's physical operations.
  • You are a lifelong learner: We have ambitious goals. Every Samsarian has a growth mindset as we work with a wide range of technologies, challenges, and customers that push us to learn on the go.
  • You believe customers are more than a number: Samsara engineers enjoy a rare closeness to the end user, and you will have the opportunity to participate in customer interviews, collaborate with customer success and product managers, and use metrics to ensure our work is translating into better customer outcomes.
  • You are a team player: Working on our Samsara Engineering teams requires a mix of independent effort and collaboration. Motivated by our mission, we’re all racing toward our connected operations vision, and we intend to win together.
In this role, you will:
  • Design, build, and operate high-scale ingestion pipelines from OLTP sources (RDS, DynamoDB) or internal APIs (e.g. gRPC) into our data lakehouse (Delta Lake on S3).
  • Develop and own distributed data infrastructure and internal tools (e.g. orchestration frameworks, metadata services, data catalogs).
  • Improve reliability, observability, and developer experience for Spark (Databricks) and potentially other future compute engines.
  • Build internal libraries, APIs, and interfaces (Go, Python) used across Samsara to move and access data.
  • Collaborate with engineers across infrastructure, data science, product engineering, and security to scale our platform.
  • Work with technologies like Spark, Golang, Python, Terraform, and AWS (S3, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis).
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.

Minimum requirements for the role:

  • 4+ years of professional software experience in production environments
  • 4+ years building or maintaining large-scale, production-grade data platforms (including data lakes)
  • Strong expertise with Apache Spark
  • Strong AWS experience (S3, Lambda, SQS, Kinesis)

An ideal candidate also has:

  • Experience with our core data platform stack: Spark (Databricks), Delta Lake, or similar (Iceberg, Hudi) on object stores.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Familiarity with data catalogs and discovery tools (e.g. Unity Catalog, Hive Metastore, DataHub, Amundsen).
  • Experience with streaming data, event-driven architectures, or handling late-arriving data
  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect).
The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
$126,140$212,000 USD

What you need to know about the Chennai Tech Scene

To locals, it's no secret that South India is leading the charge in big data infrastructure. While the environmental impact of data centers has long been a concern, emerging hubs like Chennai are favored by companies seeking ready access to renewable energy resources, which provide more sustainable and cost-effective solutions. As a result, Chennai, along with neighboring Bengaluru and Hyderabad, is poised for significant growth, with a projected 65 percent increase in data center capacity over the next decade.
