JOB PURPOSE: To serve as an individual contributor on projects and assignments that are complex in nature and that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability.
Virtual Product Development (Simulation) division in India comprising group of 200 highly educated and talented engineer functioning from multiple locations in line with corporate global footprint strategy and providing simulation support to Caterpillar's global business units in Structural, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Engine and Machine Performance Simulation etc. areas.
Role Definition: Individual contributor with ability to perform very complex simulation individually and/or in a team environment with accountability on quality, velocity and cost.
Responsibilities: The Simulation Sr. Associate Engineer will be accountable for evaluating designs, provide design recommendation and improve the existing process. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies and resolves problems. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to tech lead role, the major focus of the job is on program delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different units, suppliers, customers, and/or other teams and begin enhancing general and business skills. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions may significantly impact on: product performance, durability, quality, reliability, and serviceability; negotiations with suppliers; leveraging new technologies; warranty; total cost of non-quality; costs; sales; and customer perception.
Success factors for the Simulation Sr. Associate Engineer include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for velocity, quality, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up-to date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.
Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: evaluate products and processes; perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; perform product maintenance; keep up to date on new technologies or develop new technologies; communicate technical information to dealers, customers, team members, suppliers, and other units; support and advise other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, dealers, customers, and suppliers; and develop and maintain keen understanding of internal and external customers' needs.
The Simulation Sr. Associate Engineer must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key skills to be developed at this level are data extraction/analysis, failure analysis and problem solving, application of simulation tools and methods, and practical application of theory and concepts.
BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
Position is part of a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) team that is responsible for supporting the Combustion, emission, performance and mechanical development of Caterpillar engines. Candidate will be responsible for supporting the Global team in design, development and validation of mechanical system performance through CFD analysis. Candidate will be responsible for doing CFD simulation independently and improve/develop new processes. Candidate is expected to evaluate different designs and provide suitable recommendations to improve/develop new products. Candidate must ensure compliance to all process requirements & Quality systems. Candidate will be responsible for mentoring and guiding team members on technical aspects.
Degree Requirement:
PhD/Post-graduation from reputed institute in Mechanical / Automotive Engineering (3 to 4 Years of Industrial Experience) with specialization in the fields of fluid and thermal sciences. Candidate is expected to have strong background in Multiphase flow, heat transfer, turbulence and numerical methods.
Technical Excellence:
- Prior experience in CFD modeling (PhD/MTech with 3-4 years of industrial experience)
- Knowledge of underlying theoretical principles of Mechanical Engineering.
- Working experience in developing/optimizing engine and powertrain system for large vehicles
- Strong knowledge of Multiphase flow and turbulence models
- Hands on experience in Star CCM+ ANSYS Fluent
- Hands on experience in modeling clutch and brake fluid simulation
- Hands on experience in 1D Gt-Suite and AIM for Lube system modeling
- Strong knowledge in optimization and good understanding of ML concepts
- Sound understanding of Engine and Powertrain system
- Experience in working with global teams in engine and powertrain development
Problem Solving:
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to perform complex assignments
Experience is using optimization tools and machine learning concepts
Demonstrated ability to independently solve problems
Good understanding of Fluid Mechanics & Heat Transfer and Multiphase flow fundamentals
Experience with internal & external flow, Conjugate heat transfer including radiation, multiphase flow and transient analysis preferably in automotive / aerospace domain.
Positive attitude, team work, global diversity work culture and good communication.
Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work groups
