About this role
The Globalization team at Udemy is on a mission to make learning accessible to everyone, everywhere. As a Software Engineer on the Globalization team, you will take ownership of designing and implementing features that drive our international growth. Moving beyond simple tasks, you will be responsible for scoping and executing small-to-medium-sized projects, often collaborating with product managers and designers to refine requirements. You will build robust backend services and APIs (and potentially frontend components) that are scalable, secure, and performant.
You are someone who is comfortable working with a degree of autonomy—you can take a defined problem, break it down into technical tasks, and deliver a high-quality solution. You are proactive in raising potential risks, eager to understand the "why" behind the product, and committed to writing code that is not just functional but also maintainable and testable.
This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who has mastered the basics and is ready to expand their scope, tackle more complex challenges, and play a key role in helping Udemy truly go global.
What you'll be doing
Own & Execute: Take ownership of small-to-medium sized frontend projects, breaking down high-level requirements into technical tasks and delivering them independently.
Build & Optimize: Develop scalable, performant, and accessible user interfaces using React.js and Next.js, ensuring a seamless experience across devices and regions.
Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work directly with Product Managers, Designers, and Backend Engineers to refine requirements, define API contracts, and iterate on user experiences.
Uphold Quality: Write robust, testable code and actively participate in code reviews to maintain high standards for design patterns, security, and maintainability.
Monitor & Maintain: Proactively monitor the health of your features in production, troubleshooting issues and optimizing performance (e.g., Core Web Vitals) to ensure reliability.
Mentor & Grow: Share knowledge with the team, mentor junior engineers, and continuously expand your own technical expertise in the modern frontend ecosystem.
What we're looking for
Education: B.S. degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field.
Experience: Minimum three (3) years of experience as a frontend software engineer, with a track record of delivering complex web features.
Frontend Mastery: Deep proficiency in React.js and Next.js, with a strong grasp of the component lifecycle, hooks, and server-side rendering (SSR) concepts.
Core Fundamentals: Strong command of TypeScript and JavaScript (ES6+), along with a solid understanding of the DOM, semantic HTML, and modern CSS.
Testing Mindset: Proven experience with testing frameworks and methodologies (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress) to ensure code reliability.
Technical Design: Ability to design reusable components and manage application state effectively (using Context, Redux, or similar libraries).
Communication: Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Micro-Frontends (MFE): Experience working with or migrating to Micro-Frontend architectures (Module Federation, Single-SPA).
Globalization: Experience with internationalization (i18n) and localization libraries (react-intl, i18next).
Performance: Experience analyzing and improving web performance metrics.
GraphQL: Familiarity with consuming GraphQL APIs.
CI/CD: Experience with modern build tools and CI/CD pipelines.
We understand that not everyone will match each of the above qualifications. However, we also realize that everyone has unique experiences that can add value to our company. Even if you think your background might not perfectly align, we'd love to hear from you!
Application deadline: 18/02/26
