Software Development Engineer III (Backend)

Rapyuta Robotics, an ETH Zurich startup headquartered in Tokyo, aspires to become the global leader in making robots more accessible. We currently lead the pick-assist AMR market in Japan and have secured investments from reputable backers, including Goldman Sachs, Sony, and Yaskawa. 

As we establish a global hub in Chennai as an independent center to facilitate our global expansion, we're seeking a Backend Engineer III specializing in Python to architect, design, and implement scalable backend systems for our robotics cloud platform. Your role will be crucial in building WMS (Warehouse Management System) interface integrations, authentication systems, and backend services that power our warehouse robotics solutions. You will collaborate with robotics, frontend, and infrastructure teams to deliver production-quality systems. 

Responsibilities: 

• Architect, design, and implement scalable backend services and APIs using Python for robotics cloud platform 

• Develop and maintain WMS interface integrations to connect robotics systems with customer warehouse management systems 

• Build robust authentication and authorization systems including OAuth, JWT, RBAC, and SSO implementations 

• Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices with focus on reliability, performance, and scalability 

• Build distributed backend systems handling real-time data from multiple robot fleets and warehouse operations 

• Optimize database queries and backend performance for high-throughput, low-latency operations 

• Implement security best practices for cloud services, API security, and data protection 

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including robotics, frontend, DevOps, and QA to deliver integrated solutions 

• Write and maintain comprehensive unit, integration, and API tests 

• Perform code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to technical leadership 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• At least 5-7 years of backend development experience with strong Python expertise 

• Deep proficiency in Python with modern frameworks (FastAPI, Django, Flask) and asynchronous programming 

• Strong understanding of RESTful API design, microservices architecture, and integration patterns 

• Experience building authentication and authorization systems (OAuth2, JWT, RBAC, SSO) 

• Experience with external system integrations, particularly WMS or ERP systems 

• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis) including schema design and optimization 

• Strong grasp of distributed systems concepts including message queues, event-driven architecture, and asynchronous processing 

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker) 

• Proficient in designing scalable, maintainable, and testable backend systems with solid grasp of design patterns 

• Experience with test-driven development and API testing frameworks (pytest, unittest) 

• Strong commitment to code quality, documentation, and code reviews 

• Strong communication skills in English 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience building backend systems for IoT, robotics, or real-time distributed systems 

• Familiarity with WMS protocols, APIs, and integration patterns 

• Experience with time-series databases and telemetry data processing 

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code 

• Understanding of monitoring, logging, and observability tools (Prometheus/Grafana) 

• Experience with API gateway patterns and rate limiting strategies 

• Open-source contributions in Python backend or distributed systems projects 

• Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills in complex distributed environments 

• Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently
