More about our mission and what we offer.

Job Description

The team you’ll be working with: Mitigation Requirements

At Wise, we’re on a mission to make financial services faster, simpler, and more accessible for everyone. To achieve our mission, we also need to safeguard our platform against financial crime and ensure our customers’ money are safe. The Mitigation Requirements team plays a critical role in this by providing a highly scalable system to orchestrate which information we need to request from our customers, and then have automations and Servicing Agents to review it.

We are developing the infrastructure that provides teams at Wise with insights into the operational cost and risk associated with their ownership of the Wise product. This empowers them to enhance the product, reducing Wise's cost for customers and enabling a smoother experience when additional information is required from them. The infrastructure also enables automation of Servicing processes through a rich API in a distributed environment, and it is the core connection between customers and our Servicing agents.

What Does Our Team Look Like?

We’re a backend focused team, focused on high quality, scalable distributed systems. To deliver impact faster, we engage with other teams at Wise, so we deliver a platform with the right complexity and adaptability that gets more impactful for Wise on every release. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. We value ownership, knowledge sharing, and a commitment to building stable, scalable systems while embracing fast-paced learning and iteration.

What We Expect From You

As a Backend Engineer, you'll be instrumental in building and maintaining robust and scalable backend systems. You'll independently tackle significant development tasks, contribute to project delivery, and collaborate closely with the team on feature implementation and issue resolution. You'll also play a key role in cross-team collaboration, essential for building and growing our platform for other Wise teams. This includes documenting at the appropriate abstraction level to scale the adoption of our developments. We're looking for a proactive individual with a strong foundation in backend technologies, a passion for writing clean and efficient code, and a desire to learn and grow within a supportive environment.

Qualifications

Technical Excellence

  • 3+ years of experience with Java or other JVM-based languages, and hands-on experience with the Spring framework.

  • A track record of writing clean, maintainable code and a strong belief in best practices like code reviews, open feedback, and continuous improvement.

  • Familiarity with backend development, including databases (SQL/NoSQL), synchronous/asynchronous communication, and distributed systems.

  • Experience with web development technologies such as REST APIs, microservices, and CI/CD pipelines.

  • The ability to design technical solutions that balance latency, throughput, adaptability and scalability.

  • A passion for learning new technologies, tools, and patterns to solve problems effectively.

Product Mindset

  • A customer-first approach — you prioritize work that solves real customer pain points and use data to drive decisions.

  • The ability to take ownership of problems, propose solutions, and drive projects end-to-end to deliver measurable impact.

  • A knack for identifying opportunities to deliver value faster and providing constructive feedback on product and design decisions.

 Collaboration

  • Strong communication skills — you can break down complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences and collaborate effectively across teams.

  • A proactive mindset — you take initiative to improve our codebase, architecture, and processes.

  • A passion for knowledge sharing — you enjoy fostering a culture of learning within the team.

Additional Information

What you need to know about the Chennai Tech Scene

To locals, it's no secret that South India is leading the charge in big data infrastructure. While the environmental impact of data centers has long been a concern, emerging hubs like Chennai are favored by companies seeking ready access to renewable energy resources, which provide more sustainable and cost-effective solutions. As a result, Chennai, along with neighboring Bengaluru and Hyderabad, is poised for significant growth, with a projected 65 percent increase in data center capacity over the next decade.
