MongoDB is seeking an experienced US Sales Tax Manager responsible for overseeing all aspects of sales and use tax compliance, reporting, and planning across the organization. This role ensures adherence to state and local tax laws, manages tax audits, and identifies tax savings opportunities. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of U.S. indirect tax regulations, strong analytical skills, and experience working with tax automation systems.

We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Austin, New York City, or Palo Alto for our hybrid working model.

Key Responsibilities:Sales and Use Tax Compliance:
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation, filing, and payment of sales and use tax returns in all applicable jurisdictions
  • Review and reconcile monthly tax filings, payments, and journal entries
  • Maintain and manage exemption certificates and ensure proper application
  • Oversee the configuration and maintenance of tax rates in ERP/tax engine systems (e.g. Avalara)
  • Develop and maintain documented procedures and internal controls for sales tax processes
Audit Management:
  • Act as the primary point of contact for sales and use tax audits and inquiries
  • Compile documentation, respond to auditor information requests, and negotiate settlements where necessary
  • Identify and mitigate audit risk through process improvements and proactive compliance strategies
Tax Strategy and Planning:
  • Monitor changes in sales tax laws, regulations, and court rulings affecting the business
  • Recommend and implement tax-efficient solutions and internal controls to reduce tax exposure
Miscellaneous Business Taxes and Property Taxes Compliance:
  • Manage and review the filings of miscellaneous taxes such as business tax filings, property tax filings, business registrations, etc
Team Leadership
  • Work cross-functionally with Accounting, Sales, IT, finance, legal, and operations teams to ensure tax compliance is integrated into broader business processes
  • Supervise and mentor tax staff as needed
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MST preferred)
  • 8+ years of indirect tax experience, preferably in a multi-state environment or large corporation
  • Strong understanding of U.S. sales and use tax laws, nexus rules, and taxability
  • Proficiency with tax software and ERP systems (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, SAP, Oracle, OneSource)
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and project management skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

MongoDB’s base salary range for this role is posted below. Compensation at the time of offer is unique to each candidate and based on a variety of factors such as skill set, experience, qualifications, and work location. Salary is one part of MongoDB’s total compensation and benefits package. Other benefits for eligible employees may include: equity, participation in the employee stock purchase program, flexible paid time off, 20 weeks fully-paid gender-neutral parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, 401(k) plan, mental health counseling, access to transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage, and health benefits offerings. Please note, the base salary range listed below and the benefits in this paragraph are only applicable to U.S.-based candidates.

MongoDB’s base salary range for this role in the U.S. is:
$90,000$176,000 USD
