Frequently Asked Questions

Workload Sustainability

MassMutual approaches work-life balance through flexible work practices, time-off policies, mental health resources and benefits designed to support employees through different life stages. Employees describe the company as understanding of family life, supportive of well-being and intentional about helping people manage work alongside personal responsibilities.

  • Flexible work with defined expectations: MassMutual uses a hybrid model that prioritizes in-office collaboration while preserving remote flexibility. Hybrid employees are generally expected to work in the office at least three days per week, with company-wide remote Fridays, remote weeks and additional flexible remote weeks available during the year. A customer service representative said the culture is “very inclusive and welcoming.”
  • Time off that supports real life: MassMutual offers vacation, paid holidays, flexible holidays, paid volunteer time, “take care” days, caregiver leave and bereavement leave where employees define who qualifies as a loved one. A head of talent equity, attraction and insights said, “We take a holistic view of time off,” and added that the company wants employees to “actually take that time off.”
  • Mental health and well-being resources: MassMutual provides employees and household members access to free, confidential mental health resources, including coaching and counseling sessions. The company also offers a Well-Being Wallet of up to $1,250 annually, which employees can use for eligible physical, mental and financial well-being expenses. A head of human resources said, “Mental, physical and financial health are core components of our flexible and holistic well-being strategy.”
  • Supportive managers and teams: Employees describe workload balance as supported by approachable managers and helpful colleagues. A financial professional said MassMutual has “the most supportive management team” they had experienced, while a business analyst cited “good work/life balance” and “pleasant, professional co workers.”
  • External signals:
    • Work-life balance reviews: Employees on external review sites repeatedly cite work-life balance, flexibility, family support and positive culture as strengths, with one employee saying MassMutual is “very understanding about family life.” (Glassdoor; Indeed)
    • Benefits and manager ratings: Employees surveyed on external review sites rate MassMutual’s perks and benefits an A- and manager score an A among large companies. (Comparably)
    • Workplace recognition: MassMutual has been recognized by Built In Best Places to Work, the Boston Globe Top Places to Work and the Disability Equality Index. (MassMutual Careers)

Bottom line: MassMutual supports workload balance through hybrid flexibility, holistic time off, mental health resources, strong benefits and supportive managers who help employees manage work while caring for themselves and the people who matter to them.

MassMutual's Candidate Tradeoffs

If you’re weighing whether MassMutual is the right fit, these are the core tradeoffs to consider.

  • MassMutual places greater emphasis on steady, sustainable progress and long-term performance than on rapid, high-velocity growth cycles.

MassMutual Employee Perspectives

What are some of the key ways MassMutual invests in the well-being of your employees?

At MassMutual, we focus on providing holistic and flexible benefits. We know there’s much more to our employees’ lives than the work they do for us, and we honor that. That means we have core benefits like medical, dental, 401(k) and generous vacation time, but we go far beyond that to offer meaningful benefits that support our employees’ full, unique lives. For example, we offer an annual charitable contribution match and paid time off for employees to volunteer for causes they care about. We also offer resources like health coaching and fitness classes, both onsite and virtual. We’re always seeking to increase the breadth and flexibility of what we offer, ensuring our benefits meet employees’ diverse needs at each stage of life.

Part of this is empowering employees to prioritize who and what is most important to them. From bereavement leave where employees can define who their loved ones are, to generous caregiver leave, we want employees to be there for the ones they love.

This is just a snapshot of some of our benefits. It’s not about industry standards — it’s about supporting all employees’ well-being in ways that are meaningful to them.

The last couple of years have been especially taxing on people's physical and mental health. How has MassMutual adapted or expanded its benefits offerings to support employees' needs and meet them where they are?

Mental, physical and financial health are core components of our flexible and holistic well-being strategy. We offer MassMutual employees and members of their households access to a range of free, confidential mental health resources. As an example, all employees and members of their household have access to virtual and in-person counseling and coaching resources through a personalized care plan.

There’s also our $1,250 annual “Well-Being Wallet” to support employees on their wellness journeys. The results have been phenomenal. The diversity and flexibility of what is eligible is critical. We believe in giving employees the resources and the freedom to choose the most fulfilling wellness path for them.

MassMutual supports work-life balance through flexible time off, hybrid and remote work options, caregiver leave, parental leave, volunteer time off and benefits designed around employees’ lives outside of work. The company’s Well-Being Wallet gives employees $1,250 per year to use toward what well-being means to them, from fitness and meditation to financial planning, childcare and eldercare expenses.

“What matters most to us is that we’re creating flexible time off options that serve our employees as whole people and give them the balance they need to enjoy their lives outside of work to the fullest.”
