Job Description

Purpose of the role

To build and maintain the systems that collect, store, process, and analyse data, such as data pipelines, data warehouses and data lakes to ensure that all data is accurate, accessible, and secure. 

Accountabilities

  • Build and maintenance of data architectures pipelines that enable the transfer and processing of durable, complete and consistent data.
  • Design and implementation of data warehoused and data lakes that manage the appropriate data volumes and velocity and adhere to the required security measures.
  • Development of processing and analysis algorithms fit for the intended data complexity and volumes.
  • Collaboration with data scientist to build and deploy machine learning models.

Director Expectations

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.

Role: Azure Data Engineering Director

  • A dynamic and experienced Azure Data Engineering Director to lead the data strategy and operations.
  • To establish the level of resilience required for our EDP Cloud Fabric through a multi-cloud model, and enable key capabilities such as PowerBI and OpenAI from Microsoft, EDP requires a senior SME in this space to collaborate with the leads across GTIS, CSO, and CTO to accelerate the introduction and adoption of new designs on Azure.
  • As part of the strategy to leverage our India presence for critical deliverables for the enterprise. Key Responsibilities for the role include:
  • Strategic Data Leadership
    • Define and execute a comprehensive data strategy aligned with business objectives.
    • Leverage Azure services to drive innovation in data processing, analytics, and insights delivery.
  • Azure Ecosystem Expertise
    • Architect and manage large-scale data platforms using Azure tools like Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks, and Cosmos DB.
    • Optimize data engineering pipelines for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency.
  • Data Management & Governance
    • Establish robust data governance frameworks to ensure compliance with industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
    • Oversee data quality, security, and consistency across all platforms.
  • Team Leadership
    • Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing data engineering team.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to bridge technical and business objectives.
  • Advanced Analytics Enablement
    • Ensure data readiness for AI/ML initiatives, empowering predictive and prescriptive analytics.
    • Drive the adoption of real-time insights through event-driven architectures.
  • Operational Excellence
    • Streamline ETL/ELT processes for faster data processing and reduced downtime.
    • Monitor and manage Azure resource usage to ensure cost-effective solutions.
  • Innovation & Competitive Advantage
    • Identify and implement cutting-edge Azure technologies to disrupt traditional business models.
    • Create new revenue streams through data-driven innovation.
