About the role

As a Commercial Manager within AGL’s C&I Decarbonisation and Customer Strategy team, you will play a strategic, high‑impact role at the forefront of Australia’s energy transition.
You will lead complex commercial negotiations, shape the commercial and financial structuring of large‑scale C&I energy solutions, and guide the development of new and emerging products across AGL’s Customer Energy Resources (CER) portfolio.
Acting as a senior commercial leader, you will influence deal strategy, set standards for contract quality and risk analysis, and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to position AGL as the decarbonisation partner of choice for Australian businesses. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex, cross‑functional environments and wants to help shape the future of commercial energy solutions.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead complex commercial negotiations for C&I transactions, including PPAs and bespoke agreements.

  • Drive commercial delivery across the deal pipeline, working closely with business development managers and Legal to finalise contracts and secure internal approvals.

  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders across Sales, Engineering, Delivery, Legal and Finance to ensure alignment on commercial rationale and deal strategy.

  • Develop and deepen relationships with customers, counterparties and advisors to grow the deal pipeline and strengthen AGL’s market position.

  • Provide strategic, solutions‑focused commercial advice on deal structure, risk appetite, pricing and defensible commercial positions.

  • Prepare and present clear commercial rationales to support internal decision‑making on risk, pricing and escalations.

  • Lead commercial and financial structuring of complex transactions, including physical, virtual and sleeved PPAs and government‑supported offtake mechanisms.

  • Translate technical and operational inputs into commercial outcomes, directing cross‑functional contributions to optimise deal structures.

  • Oversee the full suite of C&I contracts, ensuring they are fit‑for‑purpose and support new and emerging product offerings.

  • Enable continuous improvement and commoditisation of contracts and commercial processes for new products.

  • Identify optimal routes to market to maximise value creation for AGL’s C&I energy solutions.

  • Act as a senior escalation point, mentoring junior team members in negotiation, contract drafting, risk analysis and stakeholder management.

What You'll Bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, business, finance, engineering or a related discipline.

  • Extensive experience negotiating and managing high‑value, bespoke commercial contracts.

  • Strong commercial and legal acumen, with the ability to lead complex matters and provide authoritative advice to senior stakeholders.

  • Deep understanding of energy markets, C&I energy products and PPA structures (physical, virtual, sleeved, government‑supported).

  • Strong financial capability, including interpreting financial models and structuring bankable transactions.

  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate across commercial, technical, legal and operational teams.

  • Experience mentoring or guiding junior team members in a commercial or legal environment.

  • Confidence operating in high‑stakes negotiations with senior counterparties and advisors.

What you need to know about the Chennai Tech Scene

To locals, it's no secret that South India is leading the charge in big data infrastructure. While the environmental impact of data centers has long been a concern, emerging hubs like Chennai are favored by companies seeking ready access to renewable energy resources, which provide more sustainable and cost-effective solutions. As a result, Chennai, along with neighboring Bengaluru and Hyderabad, is poised for significant growth, with a projected 65 percent increase in data center capacity over the next decade.
