Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

Join us as a Data Engineer at Barclays where you will spearhead the evolution of our data platforms and pipelines, driving innovation and operational excellence. You will harness cutting-edge technology to build and manage robust, scalable and secure data solutions, ensuring seamless delivery of our digital and analytics outcomes.

To be successful as a Data Engineer, you should have experience with:

  • Experience in Data Warehousing / ETL / Data Integration projects, delivering end-to-end pipelines (ingestion, transformation, validation, and publish). 

  • Strong SQL & PL/SQL skills – advanced SQL (strong in Teradata), with solid Data Modelling (dimensional / relational) and querying skills for data extraction, transformation, validation, and query performance tuning mindset.

  • Scripting/programming (e.g., Unix Shell Scripting and PySpark/Python) to build reliable, testable pipelines; ability to write and debug shell scripts for job orchestration.

  • Good understanding of AWS Cloud services for data engineering (e.g., S3-based data storage and cloud-native pipeline patterns), with awareness of security and controls required for enterprise data.

  • Scheduling Tools: Familiarity with Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) or similar.

  • Testing & QA: Exposure to SIT, E2E, and OAT testing cycles; Should be able to write test cases and execute testing scenarios.

  • Agile Delivery: Experience with JIRA for sprint planning, backlog grooming, and delivery tracking.

  • Collaborate with architects, analysts, and QA teams to ensure data quality and system stability.

  • Code reviews, peer testing, and production deployments.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Maintain documentation and support audit and compliance requirements.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Hands on development with design and building of medium to large enterprise projects; strong ownership, troubleshooting and ability to work through complex data issues end-to-end.

  • Experience in BI/Reporting tools (e.g., Business Objects / Power BI / Tableau) and supporting downstream reporting & analytics consumption.

  • Familiarity with engineering ways of working: Agile/Scrum delivery, Jira, version control (Git), and CI/CD style release discipline for data pipelines.

  • Knowledge of Banking domain and good awareness of risk, controls, data quality, and secure handling of sensitive data in regulated environments.

  • GenAI‑assisted code generation and validation: Ability to use GenAI/copilot tools to generate and fix code issues, test cases, summarize logs and accelerate defect triage.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and automation efforts.
