Overall purpose of role
The Engineering Director – Digital Channels is accountable for engineering leadership and delivery of client‑ and colleague‑facing digital channels across the organization. The role focuses on building, evolving and operating high‑quality web and mobile experiences that are consistent, scalable and secure, leveraging modern front‑end, backend‑for‑frontend and API‑driven architectures.
The role operates in a highly federated environment and requires close collaboration across multiple business units, platforms and technology domains to deliver seamless digital experiences. Operating in a balanced hands‑on and leadership model, the role provides deep technical leadership while leading teams, shaping digital engineering standards and accelerating delivery across web and mobile channels.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead and develop high‑performing digital engineering teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and engineering excellence.
- Own and execute the engineering roadmap for digital channels, aligning client and colleague experience outcomes with enterprise digital and technology strategies.
- Drive modern digital channel engineering using web and mobile technologies, including Angular, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, and backend‑for‑frontend patterns supported by scalable APIs and microservices.
- Maintain significant hands‑on engagement to provide technical leadership through architecture design, framework review, code review and design reviews
- Design and evolve shared digital platforms, frameworks and reusable components to enable consistency, accessibility and accelerated delivery across channels and business units.
- Lead delivery of responsive, resilient and secure web and mobile experiences, ensuring strong performance, observability and user experience standards.
- Work closely with Product Owners, UX/UI teams, Architects, Platform teams and Operations to ensure digital experience alignment across organizational boundaries.
- Drive effective integration between frontend channels and backend platforms using well‑governed APIs and experience‑led design patterns.
- Be accountable for delivery outcomes across quality, time, cost and risk, acting as senior escalation point for complex digital delivery and production issues.
- Ensure all digital engineering activities comply with regulatory requirements, Enterprise‑Wide Risk Management Framework and Barclays policies and standards.
Essential Skills
- Strong engineering leadership experience delivering large‑scale digital channels in complex, regulated environments.
- Deep hands‑on experience with web technologies such as Angular, React, JavaScript/TypeScript and modern UI engineering practices.
- Proven experience delivering mobile applications and mobile‑first or responsive web experiences.
- Strong experience designing backend‑for‑frontend layers and consuming API‑based and microservices platforms.
- Experience building shared digital platforms, frameworks or component libraries used across multiple teams or business units.
- Ability to lead in a federated operating model, working effectively across organizational and technology boundaries.
- Strong understanding of performance, security, accessibility and resilience considerations for digital channels.
- Ability to balance hands‑on technical contribution with leadership, delivery accountability and stakeholder management.
- Highly effective communicator across technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Experience working across Agile delivery models and multi‑team environments.
