Amex GBT is a place where colleagues find inspiration in travel as a force for good and – through their work – can make an impact on our industry. We’re here to help our colleagues achieve success and offer an inclusive and collaborative culture where your voice is valued.

Our Enterprise Data Governance Office (EDGO), part of the broader Data Governance, Quality & Trust organization, is seeking an Enterprise Data Governance Lead to join us as a key partner across Technologies, Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders, strengthening data governance practice and the broader GBT data community. In this role, you will bring meaningful depth in Privacy, Compliance, and Information Security, complementing the team's broader focus on data governance fundamentals, while also treating data as a strategic asset, with exposure to core governance fundamentals including data cataloging, uniform data definitions, data quality, lineage, and full data lifecycle management, applied to the complex, multi-source data that underpins global business travel (bookings, ticketing, supplier data across a variety of applications and platforms). This is a foundational role: you will help build governance structures and accountability models where none currently exist, not maintain an established program.

What You'll Do

  • Manage data as a strategic product by defining clear ownership, accessibility, and usability of datasets, and establishing standard definitions that enable seamless cross-functional understanding, including consistent taxonomies across booking, ticketing, servicing and supplier data.
  • Develop and help operationalize data owner and data steward accountability models, establishing clear decision rights before governance structures scale across domains.
  • Develop a robust data governance framework that ensures high-quality, well-documented data assets, promotes data democratization, and supports reliable outcomes through consistent data interpretation and standardization.
  • Understand and help govern data contracts owned by data producers, ensuring contract standards support downstream data consumer needs and prevent upstream changes from 'breaking' product features.
  • Enable self-service product discovery by managing the data catalog to ensure product teams can independently find and understand the lineage of data.
  • Proactively monitor and audit data quality metrics, governance effectiveness, and data governance maturity, providing actionable insights and recommendations to continuously elevate data management practices.
  • Support governance of prioritized metrics and KPIs within the enterprise semantic layer, partnering with platform and analytics teams to ensure metric definitions align to governed data domains and standard business terminology.
  • Partner with Privacy and InfoSec teams on data handling, access, and protection requirements as they intersect with governance work, without absorbing primary ownership of those functions.
  • Support internal and external audit readiness by maintaining evidence repositories, control documentation, and remediation tracking for data governance and data quality findings.
  • Contribute to data readiness and governance standards that support GBT's AI-enabled operating model, ensuring governed, trustworthy data underpins generative and agentic AI travel use cases.
  • Design and implement comprehensive training and awareness programs that advance data governance best practices, data governance principles, and a culture of data democratization across the organization.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Management, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and implementing data governance frameworks, data product management, and standards.
  • Experience establishing data owner/steward accountability models and decision-rights frameworks, ideally in an organization building governance from an early or immature state.
  • Experience with data governance tools/platforms (e.g., Alation, Ataccama, Collibra) and data cataloging.
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) and enterprise software applications relevant to governance tooling.
  • Familiarity with semantic layer or metrics governance concepts (metric definitions, KPI standardization) preferred.

What you need to know about the Chennai Tech Scene

To locals, it's no secret that South India is leading the charge in big data infrastructure. While the environmental impact of data centers has long been a concern, emerging hubs like Chennai are favored by companies seeking ready access to renewable energy resources, which provide more sustainable and cost-effective solutions. As a result, Chennai, along with neighboring Bengaluru and Hyderabad, is poised for significant growth, with a projected 65 percent increase in data center capacity over the next decade.
