WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Product Owner is responsible for the product, carrying out the product vision, and ensuring the ROI. Manages one or more medium complexity projects or one complex project, and guides the overall product goals within an engineering program.

The Product Owner is the key product stakeholder within the program and responsible for a cohesive, comprehensive, and practical product. The Product Owner understands the usage, market, needs, and business purpose of the product domain for which they are responsible. Responsible for Release Planning, Sprint Planning, creating a Product Backlog of Epics and Stories, identifying Risks, and assisting the program with pertinent Domain Knowledge, and makes final decisions within the program on Product solutions and design that will shape the product. The Product Owner is a liaison between the program and Product Management regarding the product which includes working closely with Product Management to negotiate product scope, communicate product vision decisions from the team, and helping to meet the needs of additional stakeholders. Acts as an advocate of Agility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

Liaison & Communication

  • Strongly represents, interfaces with and engages the business user/product management.

  • Acts as a fully integrated team member.

  • Uses clear goals to communicate the project vision at the beginning of every release and sprint so that the team understands and is equipped to realize it.

  • Makes business decisions and clearly communicates requirements through epics and stories so they are understood.

  • Communicates status outside the team.

  • Collaborates with the team, senior product owner, product management, leadership and other teams

  • Presents the product vision, goals, etc. to the engineering team, product management and the customers

Development

  • Responsible for managing one or more medium complexity projects or one complex project

  • Creates, maintains, prioritizes, and sequences the product backlog based on business value or ROI.

  • Creates user stories and advanced acceptance tests from themes and features granular enough for a single sprint.

  • Prioritizes user stories or defects/bugs by business value.

  • Decides which user stories or defects/bugs are scheduled into sprints.

  • Provides rapid feedback.

  • Participates in project planning, daily stand-up meetings (scrums), reviews, retrospectives, sprint and release planning, demos and other Scrum-related meetings.

Application Support

  • Reviews deliverable and demonstrable code after every sprint, and has the authority to accept or reject.

  • Develops and maintains standards for testing and progress visibility.

  • Provides strong progress reporting.

  • Assists as needed with backlog maintenance.

  • Assists with internal and external communication, improving transparency, and radiating information of features and defects/bugs.

  • Assists with prioritization and resolution of defects/bugs.

  • Works with clients/end users on understanding business impact of a defects/bug and providing potential work arounds

Team Management

  • Maintains accessibility and participates proactively and constantly in the team activities.

  • Steers the project to ensure delivery of business value.

  • Remains visible, vocal, and objective.

  • Provides support and assistance to junior product owners

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degreeor higher education level, or its foreign equivalent, in Software Engineering or related discipline

  • Total Work Experience: minimum of 8 years

  • Product Experience: minimum of 8 years

  • Domain Experience: minimum of 8 years

Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:

Product & Domain Knowledge

  • Must have a strong knowledge in one industry domain

  • Must have a strong knowledge in one Duck Creek Product

  • Overall knowledge P&C Insurance

  • Some awareness of the business strategy for the supported product lines

  • Must have some awareness of the software development domain

Agile/Program Management Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of how to plan for a release

  • Strong Knowledge of sprint planning

  • Strong Knowledge of Agile Methodology

  • Strong knowledge of agile estimating techniques

  • Should have insight into continuous integration and test-driven development

  • Must be organized
