The Senior Database Administrator will design, implement, and maintain the database infrastructure, ensuring optimization, high availability, and security. Responsibilities include managing large-scale databases, developing backup and disaster recovery protocols, automating tasks, and providing on-call support, while mentoring junior staff.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator to design, implement, and maintain our organization's database infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with multiple database technologies and a proven track record of optimizing database performance, ensuring high availability, and implementing security best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain large-scale database environments across multiple platforms including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, Apache Cassandra, and Microsoft SQL Server
- Develop and implement database strategies, backup procedures, and disaster recovery plans
- Monitor database performance, tune queries, and optimize database configurations for maximum efficiency
- Lead capacity planning efforts and make recommendations for hardware/software upgrades
- Implement and maintain database security measures, including access controls, encryption, and audit procedures
- Automate routine database administration tasks and develop monitoring solutions
- Mentor junior DBAs and collaborate with development teams on database design and optimization
- Manage database migrations, upgrades, and patch implementations
- Provide 24/7 on-call support for critical database issues as part of a rotation schedule
Required Skills & Experience
- 6-14 years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator
- Strong expertise in at least three of the following: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, Apache Cassandra, MSSQL Server
- Experience with high-availability configurations and disaster recovery solutions
- Proficiency in writing and optimizing complex SQL queries
- Strong knowledge of database security best practices and compliance requirements
- Experience with database monitoring tools and performance tuning
- Excellent scripting skills (Python, Bash, PowerShell)
- Knowledge of cloud database services (AWS RDS, Azure Database, GCP)
- Experience with data replication, sharding, and partitioning strategies
Technical Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of database architectures and design patterns
- Experience with database backup and recovery tools
- Proficiency in implementing and maintaining database clustering solutions
- Understanding of index optimization and query execution plans
- Experience with ETL processes and data warehousing concepts
- Knowledge of infrastructure as code and database version control
- Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant database certifications (MongoDB Certified DBA, Oracle Certified Professional, etc.)
- Experience with NoSQL databases beyond MongoDB and Cassandra
- Knowledge of data modeling and normalization techniques
- Experience with database automation tools and CI/CD pipelines
- Understanding of GDPR and other data protection regulations
- Experience with performance monitoring tools (Grafana, Prometheus, etc.)
Soft Skills
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities
- Strong documentation skills and attention to detail
- Team player with the ability to work independently when needed
- Experience mentoring junior team members
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
- Master's degree preferred but not required if compensated by equivalent experience
Work Environment
- Full-time position
- Hybrid work environment with some on-site presence required
- Participation in on-call rotation
- May require occasional weekend work for major deployments or upgrades
