Reviews test methods, worksheets, results, and reports; trains technicians; manages samples, equipment readiness, consumables, and testing capacity. Performs and coordinates mechanical and physical tests, correlation testing, method updates, audits, and client demonstrations. Maintains laboratory safety, quality, calibration, documentation, continuous improvement, and operational procedures while supporting budgets and staff development.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Prepares instructions for test methods and procedures, quality control, and maintenance procedures.
- Examines test samples and reads measuring instruments, blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and operational instructions.
- Develops operating, maintenance, and test procedures based on laboratory procedures, standards and safety policies.
- Assists in scheduling, assigning, reviewing and coordinating workflow to assure proper utilization of staff.
- Directs the daily activities of designated staff.
- Collaborates with supervisor on staffing levels, performance appraisals and merit ratings of staff.
- Ensures company policies are followed in the lab areas.
- Designs, adapts or directs the building of test setups and equipment to new situations, based on analysis of test specifications and engineering personnels requests and instructions.
- Prepares purchase and material requisitions.
- Recommends solutions to observed test problems.
- Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and laboratory area.
- Operates with minimal supervision within defined limits of responsibility.
- Communicates with engineering personnel to receive instructions, convey data and determine equipment availability and with clients during test setup and performance to demonstrate or otherwise illustrate equipment test methods and/or discuss test results.
- Communicates with UL field representatives to discuss follow-up tests, samples, equipment, methods and/or results.
- Communicates with plant department personnel to offer suggestions pertinent to equipment needs and to arrange for delivery of samples from receiving dock.
- Records observed or calculated data on appropriate UL forms and prepares data sheets and reports.
- Develops training seminars and may assist in training laboratory staff subordinates.
- Plans tests, evaluates test results and reports opinions and interpretations.
- May assist PDEs and/or Engineering to modify existing methods or develop and validate new test methods.
- Assists in developing annual budgetary goals, capital expenditure budget for laboratory equipment, and tactical plans for the assigned laboratory section.
- Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
- Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
- Performs other duties as directed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of footwear testing standards and methods, including SATRA, ASTM, ISO, and DIN requirements.
- Supervise, monitor, and follow up on footwear testing activities performed by laboratory technicians to ensure compliance with approved test methods and procedures.
- Review worksheets and test requests to verify correct test methods, specifications, and instructions, and provide clear technical guidance to technicians prior to testing.
- Organize and conduct training programs for laboratory staff related to mechanical and physical testing procedures for footwear in accordance with industry standards.
- Distribute samples and provide detailed work guidelines to the respective technicians, ensuring execution of designated tests as per submitted information, procedures, and client requirements.
- Ensure the accuracy of test results, calculations, and evaluations performed by the footwear testing team and verify results with necessary raw data and attachments before report generation.
- Upload test results, raw data, and related information into the laboratory management system in accordance with test methods and buyer/client instructions.
- Ensure implementation of updated test methods, standards, and client-specific instructions within the footwear testing team.
- Monitor and ensure adequate test capacity, consumables availability, equipment readiness, and test status in the assigned testing areas.
- Perform footwear tests personally when required, considering workload distribution and the absence of concerned technicians to maintain testing continuity.
- Conduct correlation testing within the footwear laboratory to ensure consistency and reliability of test results.
- Demonstrate footwear test procedures to auditors, clients, and visitors, ensuring clear technical explanation and compliance with standards.
- Maintain full compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements and report laboratory activities and issues directly to the Physical Laboratory Manager.
- Promote teamwork and cooperation within the laboratory, support training of new team members, and ensure a clean, safe, and positive working environment.
- Strictly follow all safety rules and procedures, ensuring personal protection and compliance with safety instructions.
- Adhere to all laboratory rules, regulations, and company policies at all times.
- Verify the authorization status, calibration labels, and operational condition of testing equipment before use.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Some University education in Engineering or a related discipline plus eight years directly related experience.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality and exceptional customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully partner with Engineering and other Laboratory personnel to complete projects in a timely manner with high quality.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze special testing needs.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor more junior laboratory staff.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with customers.
- Proven ability to be innovative and creative.
- Desire to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office suite is a must.
- Ability to incorporate automation into day-to-day testing.
