About the role

An exciting new opportunity has become available for a Senior Trading Analyst to join our Trading division. You will be solving complex real-world problems, identifying & building market leading solutions and contribute to the energy transition.

You’ll be part of the Trading Algorithm Development team, working at the intersection of markets, technology, and energy assets. Together, you’ll design and refine the algorithms and applications that power automated energy trading, helping Traders unlock commercial opportunities from Australia’s largest private electricity generation portfolio and AGL’s contracts in various gas markets.

Working closely with the Physical Markets Trading Team, software developers and analysts from across Energy Markets and Development, the Senior Trading Analyst will be responsible for exploring, developing and refining algorithmic trading strategies and signals that support the dispatch of energy assets including grid scale battery autobidders, as well as evaluating their performance and influencing the wider strategy of the business or otherwise optimising the portfolio.

Key responsibilities

  • Assess and interpret business needs; analyse, design, and implement trading algorithms and support the development of applications & solutions.
  • Identify, explore and communicate opportunities and strategies to leverage the asset portfolio to capture value.
  • Track performance of existing and new implementations of algorithms and assess new opportunities from market information.
  • Maintaining a strong grasp of the NEM, gas markets, and AGL’s position in these markets, as well as the importance of compliance with the National Electricity Rules/National Gas Rules.

About you

You are comfortable working in an ever-changing world, with strong curiosity and proactively seek new knowledge. As a technical innovator and a creative and pragmatic problem solver, you enjoy solving complex business problems by developing business logic and algorithms from inception through to production. Your desire to deeply understand physical markets energy trading and influence the strategy of the business will set you up for success.

In addition to the above you will demonstrate:

  • 3+ years’ experience within an energy trading company in a relevant area, or equivalent.
  • Proven ability to understand complex problems and design solutions that have been taken to production.
  • High proficiency in Python.
  • A tertiary qualification in a quantitative discipline preferred (e.g. Operations Research, Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics, Physical Science, Econometrics, Computer Science).
  • Familiarity with the NEM or equivalent market.
