Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

At Barclays, we don’t just adapt to the future – Embark on a transformative journey as Lead Engineer - VP where you'll spearhead the evolution of our Global Platforms Services function within Global Technology and Infrastructure Services department. As a member of the Platform Services Software Engineering team, you will be dedicated to the engineering of user-friendly solutions that facilitate seamless consumption of our Cloud and Middleware platform offerings. With self-service, a high level of automation and ease of integration into application build and release pipelines, encompassing underlying virtualization and container platforms and integrating middleware software to provide a highly useable ecosystem. Your will be part of a team of engineers with accountability / responsibility for the engineering (strategy, architecture, design, build, documentation and testing) of the software components. You will work closely with your colleagues in the wider cloud and middleware organization to bring their products to life as part of a modern developer focused experience.  Additionally, your role requires effective stakeholder management, leadership, and decision-making to support business strategy and risk management

To be successful as a Lead Engineer - VP, you should have experience with:

  • Ability to provide technical leadership to complex technical problems. 
  • Strong understanding of enterprise design principles to build secure, fault tolerant and scalable systems.
  • Strong understanding of Agile application development methodology.  Strong understanding of Cloud concepts, DevOps and CI:CD.
  • Strong hands on development experience in Java or or Python any other programming language.
  • Experience of API development using REST / SOAP.
  • Experience of implementing API security and authentication (OAuth2, JWT etc.).
  • Experience working with PaaS products, including some experience of container orchestration / management utilizing products such as Red Hat OpenShift / VMWare / AWS / Azure etc.
  • Experience working with IaaS and/or PaaS products, including some experience of either virtualization, containerization, orchestration of compute/network/storage.
  • Proven track record of delivering automation solutions and Infrastructure as Code
  • A strong work ethic - team player, creative, passionate and disciplined.

Some highly valued skills include:

  • Coding experience in GoLang, Rust etc
  • Coding experience in UI technologies like HTML, JSP, Java Script, Angular JS etc.
  • Working knowledge of testing methodologies like TDD, BDD etc and testing automation.
  • Working knowledge of release and change management process (ITIL). 
  • Working knowledge of Configuration management tools such as Ansible/Chef/Terraform.
  • Working experience of event bus products such as Kafka.
  • Working knowledge of Git (or similar) source code control system.
  • Working knowledge of build pipelines with GitLab.
  • Working knowledge of build automation and dependency management tools such as Maven/Gradle.
  • Working knowledge of cloud security and network concepts.
