Position Summary: We’re looking for the “Lead Database Platform Engineer (Oracle RAC & Data Guard)” is responsible for managing the database infrastructure supporting athenaEDI and athenaIDX services. This role is based in Bangalore, India and partners closely with Systems Engineers, Database Administrators, Application Developers, Technical Support, and leadership teams across global locations. The individual will lead Oracle Grid and Database modernization initiatives, drive automation and operational excellence, and ensure database performance, scalability, and reliability. A strong understanding of Oracle database technologies and production operations is essential to success in this role.
About the Team: The Systems Software Development Infrastructure Engineering – Production team is responsible for the stability, scalability, and continuous improvement of Athenahealth’s production database platforms. The team supports critical healthcare applications and services that require high availability, performance, and security. Working closely with Engineering, Product, and R&D teams, the organization drives modernization initiatives through automation, infrastructure innovation, and adoption of emerging database technologies. Team members are empowered to solve complex technical challenges while delivering exceptional customer outcomes.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Lead Oracle Grid Infrastructure modernization, including upgrades from Oracle 19c Grid to 26ai Grid, Out-of-Place upgrades, GIMR transitions, and RAC interconnect management.
- Architect and execute Oracle database migrations from 19c to 26ai using AutoUpgrade and Data Guard Broker while ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime across production environments.
- Ensure database functionality, availability, connectivity, performance, and service continuity for internal and external customers.
- Evaluate and implement Oracle 26ai capabilities, including AI Vector Search and automated indexing, to support future healthcare platform initiatives.
- Conduct architectural reviews and performance assessments of Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 24ai/26ai deployments in large-scale Oracle Linux environments.
- Design and implement automated patching, upgrade, and maintenance solutions using Bash, Python, and OEM to support a Patching-as-Code framework.
- Perform proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and performance tuning of production database environments.
- Participate in on-call support and incident response activities to maintain platform reliability and operational excellence.
Additional Job Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary technical lead and subject matter expert for Oracle 19c-to-26ai upgrade initiatives.
- Develop upgrade standards, playbooks, and best practices for adoption across the database engineering organization.
- Conduct technical deep-dive sessions on Oracle architecture, memory management, multitenant capabilities, and platform modernization.
- Monitor and evaluate post-upgrade system performance, stability, and customer adoption metrics.
- Partner with Product and R&D teams to communicate the business value, performance improvements, security enhancements, and AI readiness enabled by Oracle 26ai.
- Translate complex technical risks, dependencies, and infrastructure constraints into actionable project plans and timelines.
- Present upgrade outcomes, technical findings, and performance benchmarks to engineering stakeholders and leadership.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, operational efficiency, scalability, and platform innovation.
Expected Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.
- 7+ years of Oracle Database Administration experience with strong expertise in RAC and Data Guard environments.
- 7+ years of experience supporting SQL Server and/or AWS RDS databases in production environments.
- Proven experience leading large-scale Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Database upgrade projects, including 12c-to-19c or 19c-to-26ai migrations.
- Strong knowledge of Oracle Linux (OEL 8/9), Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), Data Guard Broker, and AutoUpgrade tools.
- Proficiency in automation and scripting using Bash and Python for infrastructure management and operational efficiency.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional collaboration skills within complex enterprise environments.
