Job Description:

Senior Engineering Manager, Machine Learning

Big Data team is a central player in the Poshmark organization. Our mission is to

build a world-class big data platform to bring value out of data for us and for our customers. Our goal is to democratize data, support exploding business, build data and ML pipelines to fuel existing and new business critical initiatives.

At Poshmark, the Big Data & ML Engineering team plays a pivotal role in unlocking business value from data. As a Senior Engineering Manager, Machine Learning, you will lead a team of talented ML engineers focused on designing, deploying, and scaling intelligent systems that power personalization, trust & safety, catalog digitization, and marketplace operations.

This is a hands-on leadership role, combining technical depth with people management. You will mentor engineers, define the roadmap, and partner closely with data science, product, and infrastructure teams to deliver ML products that scale to millions of users and billions of events daily.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and scale a high-performing ML engineering team responsible for building end-to-end machine learning systems, including training pipelines, model serving infrastructure, and observability.

  • Drive technical design and architecture for ML services — ensuring scalability, modularity, and low-latency inference for real-time personalization, recommendations, and ranking.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners in Data Science, Product, Infra, and Analytics to align ML strategy with business priorities.

  • Establish ML engineering best practices, including CI/CD for models, data versioning, model monitoring, and feedback loops.

  • Guide the career growth of engineers through mentoring, coaching, and technical leadership.

  • Stay abreast of emerging ML trends (e.g., vector databases, feature store,  RAG pipelines, LLM fine-tuning) and incorporate relevant innovations into our systems.

  • Contribute to long-term planning, resourcing, and roadmap execution for ML and Big Data initiatives.

Ideal Candidate
  • 10+ years of total software engineering experience, including 6+ years in machine learning or applied ML engineering.

  • Proven success in leading ML systems at scale — including experience with model lifecycle management, batch/stream processing, and production deployments.

  • Deep experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, SparkML, and tooling such as MLflow, Airflow, Docker, and Kubernetes.

  • Familiarity with GenAI infrastructure (e.g., PEFT, embedding stores), recommender systems, and online learning systems.

  • Hands-on coding skills in Python, Scala (or Java), and comfort with distributed systems and data pipelines (e.g., Spark, Kafka).

  • Solid understanding of ML monitoring, retraining strategies, and post-deployment tuning.

  • Experience in building and evolving a team, driving technical direction, and influencing stakeholders across functions.

Technologies we use
  • Languages: Java, Python, Scala
  • ML Frameworks: PyTorch, TensorFlow, SparkML

  • Infra & Pipelines: Spark, Airflow, Kafka, Jenkins

  • Data Stores: Redis, MongoDB

  • MLOps Tools: MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes

  • Monitoring: Datadog, Grafana

What you need to know about the Chennai Tech Scene

To locals, it's no secret that South India is leading the charge in big data infrastructure. While the environmental impact of data centers has long been a concern, emerging hubs like Chennai are favored by companies seeking ready access to renewable energy resources, which provide more sustainable and cost-effective solutions. As a result, Chennai, along with neighboring Bengaluru and Hyderabad, is poised for significant growth, with a projected 65 percent increase in data center capacity over the next decade.
